Hoot-en-an-ny: An informal performance by folk singers, typically with participation by the audience. - The American College Dictionary.
Harry Tuft, who was instrumental in founding the Denver Folk Center, wanted to recapture the spirit and substance of the original Folklore Center hootenannies, where it was “75 cents — Pay or Play”. People would hang out, play music, listen to music, tell stories, hang out with friends, and generally just have a good time.
The Denver Folk Center has revived this this folky event, with Mr. Tuft. Their hootenanies are a combination of open stage, sing-alongs, and good times. There is a sign up sheet when you come in, and sign-up begins at 7:00 p.m. Now it is “$3.00 pay or play”, and you get to hear new songs, and old songs, and make new friends. An old-fashioned good times.
