Greg Mairhofer Returns to Nissis in Lafayette 1/13/07

I first saw Greg and his band play at the Boulder Theater at the 24-hour-shootoff Film Festival last month. They played at intermission, and his set was so good, left me wanting more. He has announced that he is returning to Nissi's, at 95th and Aprapahoe in Lafayette, on Saturday, January 13, 2007. Nissi's has this posted at their site:

Craig’s foray into the music world began in 1989 in Boulder, when he was performing as a solo artist playing mostly cover tunes. With a rapidly growing following, he decided to pick up his guitar and tour the acoustic music scene, and he traveled through the Colorado front range, mountain towns, and even the Virgin Islands. Playing covers was a great way to hone the voice and guitar work, but it didn’t do much for his songwriting skills. Through mutual friends, he hooked up with Dennis Grosvenor, a songwriter who had recently moved to the area from L.A. Together, they formed the progressive alt-rock group Orphan Tears, a band whose unique sound and finely crafted songs filled clubs and drew tremendous praise from local writers. Although Maierhofer and Grosvenor were fortunate enough to land a demo deal with Capital Records in L.A., they never hit it big outside of the local scene. The band split up shortly after the release of their first full-length album, the critically acclaimed Novocain Kiss.
After fronting a couple of bands following the breakup of Orphan Tears, Maierhofer decided to go the solo route, and it's a good thing he did. Since then, his songwriting has exploded, and his melodies and hooks have become more and more mature with each one of his introspective songs. The rooms he plays have been filling up with listeners, and in 2002, he received a nice nod of recognition from locals when they named him runner-up in the “Best Local Musician or Group” category in the Reader’s Choice Awards of the Boulder Daily Camera.

His first solo release, 49 Floors, is a maturely written collection of songs that can best be described as folk alterna-pop. Produced by Joe Bonadio, who has worked with a variety of artists ranging from Martin Sexton and Susan Todeschi to Avril Lavigne, the album features a variety of talented musicians including Bonadio, David Sancious (Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Sting), and Larry Saltzman (Simon and Garfunkel, Edie Brickell), as well as ex-Orphan Tears member Rob Pearson and local vocalist Rebecca Folsom. The result is a wonderfully produced and performed album of soaring melodies and insightful lyrics that has been well received by listeners and writers alike.

“Singer/songwriter Craig Maierhofer makes the type of toe-tapping, soul-bearing pop that can range from sentimental genius to toothache-inducing sweet.” – Boulder Weekly
