Rickie Lee Jones and Chris Smither at e-town in Boulder

Live Show: Thursday, Dec 28, 2006 7:00 pmLocation: The Boulder Theater

etown closes a year of great live tapings with a superb show featuring two outstanding artists, the incomparable singer, songwriter and 'Duchess of Coolsville' Rickie Lee Jones and guitarist, songwriter and singer Chris Smither. Rickie Lee Jones is one of the most acclaimed and talented singer-songwriters of our time. Her career spans nearly three decades of incredible musical output spanning many genres: folk, rock, jazz, soul, spoken word and pop. Always fearless, Rickie Lee has consistently pushed her seemingly limitless creative abilities, as well as the music industry's envelope. Over the last decade Chris Smither has released one gem of an album after another. His music draws as deeply from the blues as it does from American folk music, modern poets and humanist philosophers.
STEREO REVIEW: "Smither recasts the folk blues in the ethereal language of the poet, projecting a kind of streetwise mysticism."

Used Cars? No, definitely New Cars, with Todd Lundgren

The New Cars played at the Boulder theater this month. I almost went, would have loved to see Todd Lundgren with the band, but at the last minute, I got hung up, like George Carlan used to say.
Todd Rundgren: Vocals, guitarsElliot Easton: Guitars, vocalsGreg Hawkes: KeyboardsKasim Sulton: Bass, vocalsPrairie Prince: Drums
Let the good times roll… again. This ain’t your father’s automobile, or your older brother’s for that matter, but the emergence of The New Cars, comprised of original members of The Cars. Joining Elliot Easton on guitar and Greg Hawkes on keyboards, will be an all-star group of rockers in Todd Rundgren, fellow Utopia bassist Kasim Sulton, and Prairie Prince, former drummer for The Tubes. Each shares a passion for recreating the ground breaking music of The Cars, one of the most successful (and influential) bands of the “new wave” era.

How Did I Miss This? Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price in Colorado Springs 3/13/07

Last of the Breed, featuring Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price and Asleep at the Wheel takes over World Arena March 13 at 7:30 PM for this special performance. Each a country music legend in his own right, Last of the Breed will feature each of these performers singing their top hits together on stage.

I gotta blame it on this blizzard, but that’s no excuse! They have announced another show of this great group in Colorado Springs, on March 13, 2007. This is the day after the show in Loveland, Colorado, down the road from me. I jumped on tickets to that show and scored front row seats, but this time I missed out! Of course, I still got tickets, but not in the front row. I will keep working to upgrade my tickets, though. But I’m excited. Two chances to see Willie Nelson in Colorado in March!

Freddy and the Fishsticks in Aspen

Jimmy Buffett is doing another show at The Belly Up in Aspen on December 22nd.

Tickets are sold out, but they were going for $250 general admission and $600 reserved. Doors open at 8 pm for the 9:00 show.

I just saw on e-bay where a pair of tickets went for $2000.00. It is a small club, just a few hundred, I think, so it would be a cozy show. I read that last year he pulled fans on the stage to help him during the show.

A fun time in Aspen!

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Asleep at the Wheel Coming to Loveland, Colorado

Oh, Christmas came early this year.

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, and Asleep at the Wheel are coming to Loveland, Colorado, to the Budweiser Events Center, on March 12, 2007. The Budweiser Center was built in 2003, and I haven't been there to see anyone yet. The event center is big, this won’t be a cozy Red Rocks experience, but it will be fun to see these legends there. I know the center has a sponsor ship program, too, and for $1000 + you season tickets to the hockey games, and the chance to get tickets first, so I don't know what's going to be available for the rest of us. but I'm going to find out!

Good News! Dennis Kucinich Running for President in 2008

Kucinich to seek 2008 Democratic nomination CLEVELAND, Ohio (CNN)

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, will announce his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday at Cleveland's City Hall, the five-term congressman's spokesman, Andy Juniewicz, said Monday. Kucinich, a candidate for the nomination in 2004, began his political career as a Cleveland city councilman and later as the youngest person ever elected mayor of the Midwestern city. The congressman made his decision to run, according to a written statement, because he felt his own party's leadership was not aggressive enough in opposing the Iraq war. Kucinich, 60, is a staunch opponent of the Iraq war. He has advocated cutting off funds for the war, saying that voting for money to maintain or expand the war is incompatible with a position of opposition to it.

As a Democratic candidate in 2004, Kucinich was the last to drop out of the race as it became clear that John Kerry would carry the nomination. He threw his support to Kerry just days before the 2004 Democratic convention. He was re-elected last month to serve a sixth term as representative.

Greg Mairhofer Returns to Nissis in Lafayette 1/13/07

I first saw Greg and his band play at the Boulder Theater at the 24-hour-shootoff Film Festival last month. They played at intermission, and his set was so good, left me wanting more. He has announced that he is returning to Nissi's, at 95th and Aprapahoe in Lafayette, on Saturday, January 13, 2007. Nissi's has this posted at their site:

Craig’s foray into the music world began in 1989 in Boulder, when he was performing as a solo artist playing mostly cover tunes. With a rapidly growing following, he decided to pick up his guitar and tour the acoustic music scene, and he traveled through the Colorado front range, mountain towns, and even the Virgin Islands. Playing covers was a great way to hone the voice and guitar work, but it didn’t do much for his songwriting skills. Through mutual friends, he hooked up with Dennis Grosvenor, a songwriter who had recently moved to the area from L.A. Together, they formed the progressive alt-rock group Orphan Tears, a band whose unique sound and finely crafted songs filled clubs and drew tremendous praise from local writers. Although Maierhofer and Grosvenor were fortunate enough to land a demo deal with Capital Records in L.A., they never hit it big outside of the local scene. The band split up shortly after the release of their first full-length album, the critically acclaimed Novocain Kiss.
After fronting a couple of bands following the breakup of Orphan Tears, Maierhofer decided to go the solo route, and it's a good thing he did. Since then, his songwriting has exploded, and his melodies and hooks have become more and more mature with each one of his introspective songs. The rooms he plays have been filling up with listeners, and in 2002, he received a nice nod of recognition from locals when they named him runner-up in the “Best Local Musician or Group” category in the Reader’s Choice Awards of the Boulder Daily Camera.

His first solo release, 49 Floors, is a maturely written collection of songs that can best be described as folk alterna-pop. Produced by Joe Bonadio, who has worked with a variety of artists ranging from Martin Sexton and Susan Todeschi to Avril Lavigne, the album features a variety of talented musicians including Bonadio, David Sancious (Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Sting), and Larry Saltzman (Simon and Garfunkel, Edie Brickell), as well as ex-Orphan Tears member Rob Pearson and local vocalist Rebecca Folsom. The result is a wonderfully produced and performed album of soaring melodies and insightful lyrics that has been well received by listeners and writers alike.

“Singer/songwriter Craig Maierhofer makes the type of toe-tapping, soul-bearing pop that can range from sentimental genius to toothache-inducing sweet.” – Boulder Weekly

Greg Brown at Swallow Hill Denver (12/15; 12/16)

Singer, songwriter and poet Greg Brown returns to grace the Swallow Hill stage once again for two nights in a row to perform songs from his new CD The Evening Call. A two-time Grammy nominee and winner of a NAIRD Indie Award at age 18, Greg won the opportunity to play an opening set for singer Eric Andersen in Iowa City. Since then, he has been performing the four corners of the country including performances on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. Rolling Stone praises him as “a wickedly sharp observer of the human condition.” Greg has been a touring musician for over thirty years.

Years of childhood classical piano lessons and voice training have gained him a powerful voice that has been described as “thundering” and an understanding and love of various musical styles such as classical, hillbilly, early rock ‘n’ roll, country, gospel and blues that he incorporates into his songs. His unique vocals have been praised by Puremusic as “dirt and gravel road” and his songs have been said to “hearken back to the work of Howlin' Wolf himself.” All musical styles that Greg uses are his canvas to paint songs about his favorite themes community, family, home, poetry, nature and ecological responsibility things that he firmly believes in and supports. His songs have been recorded by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter to name a few.

etown in Boulder

Have you caught e-town? Maybe you’ve never even heard of it, but it’s a radio variety show that’s taped in front of a live studio audience. The shows are then played across the country on National Public Radio, community radio stations, and commercial stations.
I know e-town is genuinely a team effort, with some paid employees and many volunteers, but the energy behind e-town is it’s host and hostess, Nick and Helen Forester. They are both talented in their own right: Nick is a n acclaimed guitar player who has collaborated with many other muscians, among them Boulder’s own Hot Rize. Helen has a golden voice, and she sings and announces on the show. This talented host and hostess are professional, funny, talented, and run the show like a finely tuned Swiss knife. Their interviews are great, and you really get to learn about these famous artists through their interviews.

The shows are like old fastioned radio shows. They have popular performers who play, but who are intereviewed by Nick. Also, the show hosts authors, poets, politicians; a very diverse group of people. The tapings are really fun. They are most always at the Boulder Theater, a beautifully restored theater in downtown Boulder, but sometimes they have special tapings at Chataqua Auditorium in Boulder, or at Red Rocks Ampitheater, in Morrison. In addition to getting to be part of a live radio show, and getting to see how it gets put together, you get to hear some great music, listen to the artists tell stories, and just have a great time. At the end of the show all the artists, and the hosts, come out and sing for a musical grand finale. Everyone walks out smiling.

Community building is very important to e-town, and since 1991, e-town has presented it’s e-chievement award to groups and people who are making a difference in their coummunities. People call up and nominate people and organizations in their community, and winners are selected. Nick calls the weekly winners on the telephone, and presents the awards, and intereviews the recipients. The winners have reported that they get lots of attention from being on e-town, more people want to volunteer, contribute or use their services.

e-town has a great website, where they give information about upcoming shows, e-achievement winners, radio stations twhere you can hear the show, how to attend a show, and an archive of previous shows. The address is: http://www.etown.org,/

Old TIme Hootenanny -- Swallow Hill, Denver

Hoot-en-an-ny: An informal performance by folk singers, typically with participation by the audience. - The American College Dictionary.

Harry Tuft, who was instrumental in founding the Denver Folk Center, wanted to recapture the spirit and substance of the original Folklore Center hootenannies, where it was “75 cents — Pay or Play”. People would hang out, play music, listen to music, tell stories, hang out with friends, and generally just have a good time.

The Denver Folk Center has revived this this folky event, with Mr. Tuft. Their hootenanies are a combination of open stage, sing-alongs, and good times. There is a sign up sheet when you come in, and sign-up begins at 7:00 p.m. Now it is “$3.00 pay or play”, and you get to hear new songs, and old songs, and make new friends. An old-fashioned good times.

2008 Democratic Convention; Denver or New York City

Come on, bring it Colorado!

Governor Dean and the DNC have promised that they will announce the host city in a week or so. For up-to-date info, visit this site: http;//www.demcomwatch.blogspot.com

Denver reserves 18,000 rooms

According to the Denver Post, the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau has guaranteed the DNC at least 18,000 of the roughly 38,000 local hotel rooms, all within a 16-minute drive of downtown, for the 2008 Democratic Convention. It's Denver announcing money, and Denver announcing hotels. Is Denver feeling insecure against New York, the veteran convention city, and therefore feels they have to announce everything while the quietly confident New York gives their information privately to the DNC? Or is Denver just checking off the final items on their todo list? We should know in a week or two.

Live From Ebbets Field Volume 2 (1973 - 1976)

Well, maybe it’s like, if you can remember shows at Ebbets Field, you weren’t really there. (I do know if you think it was a field, you weren’t there.) Now FM102.3KCUV will revive memories and make you believe you were thre, even if you weren’t. Denver was a great place for music in the 1970’s, and Ebbets Field, a small night club located in the Brooks Tower near 15th and Curtis contributed and let music lovers in Denver, the front range and beyond hear some of the best music from around the world.

Denver’s famous concert promoter Chuck Morris opened up Ebbets Field, and it seemed like everybody played there in the 1970’s, including Willie Nelson, Bob Seger, Tom Waits, Lynyrd Skynyrd are only a few artists on a long list who came through the Ebbet and made musical history in Denver. Here’s more of that list, I’m not making this list up, and I was there for some of them, I think: Freddie King, Taj Mahal, John Prine, Muddy Water, Asleep At The Wheel, J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Commander Cody, Dr. John, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Peter Frampton, Dan Hicks, Lightning Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf, Kraftwerk, Little Feat, Don McLean, the Outlaws, Robin Trower, Jerry Jeff Walker, Muddy Waters, and more! Rock, blues, country, jazz, every genre found a home there.

And to prove it really happened, the good news is, the shows were professionally recorded by the staff of ListenUp, the local audio/video retailer and Ebbets’ sound company. Many of the shows were simulcast, and I have copies of those that recorded off the radio that are like the best concert tapes I own. This is thanks to Co-founder and president Walt Stinson entered into an agreement with Ebbets to simulcast them for free on the radio, or record them for re-broadcast, usually on Sunday nights.

FM 102.3 KCUV is releasing compliation CD’s of some of this music, and a portion of the profits from the newly released Volume II go to the Morgan Adams Foundation, to raise awareness and financial support for pediatric cancer.

Volume II has a great medley of Willie Nelson, including his famous “Denver”, from his Red Headed Stranger album. So, okay, turn down the lights, sit back, smoke ‘em if you’ve got em, and enjoy the musical journey this collection will take you on:

1. LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III Down Drinking at the Bar - 6/19/74
2. WILLIE NELSON Denver/over the Waves/Down Yonder - 9/2/75
3. BREWER & SHIPLEY Witchi-Tai-To - 5/25/75
4. TOM RUSH No Regrets - 10/22/74
5. LIVINGSTON TAYLOR Carolina Day - 11/27/73
6. WENDY WALDMAN Mad Mad Me - 11/7/74
7. FAIRPORT CONVENTION Matty Groves - 5/23/74
8. STRAWBS Out in the Cold/Round and Round - 3/4/74
9. BRIAN AUGER’S OBLIVION EXPRESS Happiness Is Just Around the Bend - 4/4/74
10. WET WILLIE Grits Ain’t Groceries/Soul Jones - 6/27/74
11. TOMMY BOLIN Homeward Strut - 6/3/74
12. PROCTOR & BERGMAN Channel 85 Sign-On - 12/6/73

These tracks, digitally transfered directly from the original tapes, have been remastered by Bob Ferbrache at Absinthe Studios in Westminster. The CD package was designed by Steve Holt, includes a cover shot featuring a vintage hand-illustrated Ebbets Field crew shirt, and a twelve-page booklet with archival photographs of Brian Auger, Strawbs, Brewer & Shipley, Wet Willie, Tom Rush, Tommy Bolin and Fairport Convention onstage at Ebbets, taken by Bob Ferbrache. G. Brown wrote the liner notes detailing the history of Ebbets Field as well as help ListenUp and KCUVâ€.

You can google this and find ways to buy it on line, and I’ve seen it at some independent record stores, too.
